Understand Maritime Computing Requirements with DNV GL, IEC 60945 & IEC 61174
Constraints in the maritime operations sector are numerous for on-board computer equipment. The computing embedded in maritime structures must comply with many requirements based on screen visibility, cybersecurity, shock & vibration, ingress protection, and so forth.
In searching for your next marine display or marine PC to be deployed on your naval vessel you may have come across numerous certifications showing compliance with DNV GL and various IEC standards.
Applications throughout the vessel such as in the bridge, control room or engine room will define whether particular certifications or environmental specifications to withstand the elements are required.
Solutions Validated by Maritime Authorities
Independent Foundations and Societies
DNV GL
Based on a merger between DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and GL (Germanischer Lloyd) the standard has been in place since the 2013. The DNV certificate is considered a high-quality seal, certifying the suitability of a Marine Display, Marine Panel PC, or Marine Computer for use in the oceanic sector.
IACS-E10
The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) is an organization that provides technical support and advice to promote the safety of people, property and the environment through verification of compliance with technical and engineering standards for the design, construction and life-cycle maintenance of ships, offshore units and other sea-related facilities.
IEC Certifications
IEC-60945
The IEC-60945 certification comes with the approval to satisfy the industry’s stringent security and safety demands. All instruments and components used in the ship’s bridge, even those that form a minor part of the critical framework, must be evaluated under the IEC 60945 criteria and regulations. Equipment wished to be used in navigation and radio communication systems is to comply with IEC Publication No. 60945. DNV-GL (or some of the other certified and identified third-party communities of distinction) will perform an audit.
IEC 61174
IEC 61174 is an ECDIS display standard for charting and navigation stations. ECDIS displays are colour calibrated and typically equipped with the ability to switch between modes for day, dusk and night-time operation.
