01 Hazardous Area Applications

Where Hazardous Area Computers Are Deployed

Hazardous area computing sits in four places: the operator station in the Zone 2 or C1D2 area, the control cabinet beside it, the remote wellhead or pumping station and the offshore or washdown deck. Each carries its own certification, sealing and connectivity demands, so the right platform differs from one to the next.

ATEX and UL C1D2 Panel PCs on the Plant Floor

An operator station in a Zone 2 or Class 1 Division 2 area needs a certified HMI, not an enclosure built around an ordinary one. ATEX and UL C1D2 panel PCs from 12.1 to 23.8 inches run the SCADA client and the batch screens at the point of use, and intrinsically safe HMIs deployed for wastewater management show the same hardware working in a hazardous plant.

Built to the Certifications Hazardous Areas Require

Hazardous area hardware is specified against the certification of the area it is installed in. We select products whose certificates state the zone, gas group and temperature class, and say clearly where a product is designed for an area rather than certified for it.

ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU

The European directive for equipment in explosive atmospheres; Zone 2 certification for computers used where gas is present only occasionally.

IECEx

The international certification scheme that mirrors ATEX for sites outside the EU, so one product serves a global operator's plants.

UL and CSA Class 1 Division 2

The North American classification for hazardous locations, with C1D2 panel PCs certified for areas where flammable gases are not normally present.

IP66 and IP69K Sealing

Ingress protection for outdoor, offshore and washdown installations, with 316 stainless steel where salt and chemicals corrode painted enclosures.

Outdoor Enclosures

Sealed outdoor enclosures with heating, condensation control and glanded cable entry, for computers at remote sites exposed to temperature swings and solar gain.

4G, LTE and 5G Connectivity

Industrial cellular computers with integrated modems and multi-SIM bonding for wellheads and pipelines with no wired network.

Hazardous-Area-Ready Hardware

Four product types cover most oil, gas and chemical projects. Open one to see the ranges we specify for hazardous areas, or go to the full category.

An Extension of Your Engineering Team

Our engineers work as part of your team, not as a reseller. We check the area classification, sealing and connectivity against the site before you commit to a build.

Built, Imaged and Ready to Deploy

Modules, memory, storage and modems are fitted and the OS image loaded before shipping, so each unit is tested as a complete build and documented with its certificates for the site file.

Supported for the Life of the Asset

Repeatable builds, revision control and last-time-buy planning keep later units matching the first across an asset's operating life, with certificates tracked through every revision.
