Rugged GPU Computers

Ruggedised GPU Computers for Vehicles, Rail and Defence

A rugged GPU computer puts a discrete NVIDIA GPU inside a chassis built for shock, vibration, water and extreme temperatures, so AI and vision models run on the vehicle, train, ship or outdoor site that produces the data. It is the AI rugged computer for jobs an integrated GPU or NPU cannot carry: many camera streams, LiDAR fusion and large models.

Options run from fanless builds with MXM modules and passively cooled NVIDIA L4 cards to systems with a 600 W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell and multi-GPU servers, with wide DC inputs, ignition control, M12 networking and PoE+ for cameras.

They suit autonomous vehicles and mining trucks, rail and transit, maritime surveillance, defence programmes and outdoor inspection: anywhere a rugged NVIDIA GPU has to work far from a data centre.

Choose it when the computer rides on a vehicle, train or ship, or sits outdoors where water, shock and cold come with the job. the GPU runs vision or AI in a factory cabinet or machine where the conditions are controlled. models are trained or developed in an office, lab or server room before they are deployed.

For vision and AI in a clean, climate-controlled cabinet, an industrial PC with GPU usually does the job for less, and the rugged build earns its place once the computer leaves the building.

Rugged Edge AI Computer Features

The discrete GPU is what sets these systems apart from other rugged PCs. These features keep the card seated, cooled and fed with data on the move.

Expansion Cassettes and GPU Brackets

The GPU sits in a separate cassette with its own airflow, held by locking brackets so a full-height card stays seated over rough roads, while damping brackets isolate the whole chassis from vibration.

MXM Modules for Sealed Builds

An MXM module is a GPU on a compact board that passes its heat into the chassis, so RTX Ada Embedded and Intel Arc modules can work inside fanless and IP66 enclosures where a desktop card would overheat.

Multi-GPU Rugged Servers

For sensor fusion and large models, rugged GPU servers carry two NVIDIA GPUs beside AMD EPYC or Intel Core processors, with PCIe Gen5 slots and vehicle DC power in place of a data-centre supply.

PoE+ Camera Ports

Up to eight PoE+ ports on X-coded M12 or screw-lock RJ45 connectors power the cameras straight from the computer, so a vehicle build needs no separate PoE switch.

10GbE and Fibre Inputs

Dual 10GbE ports and 10G SFP+ fibre options bring LiDAR and high-rate camera data in fast enough for the GPU to keep up, and fibre keeps long runs clear of electrical noise.

Removable Storage for Recording

Hot-swap drive bays and removable U.2 NVMe canisters keep video and sensor logs on board with RAID options, so a full data set leaves the vehicle in one lockable pack at the depot.

How to Choose a Rugged Embedded GPU Computer

Choosing a rugged embedded GPU computer starts with the model it runs, then the environment, the power on the platform and the approvals the programme asks for.

Workload and GPU Class

Count the camera streams and model size first. A 70 W low-profile card or an MXM module suits a few streams, a 150 W to 350 W RTX card or an NVIDIA L4 handles more, and two GPUs or a 600 W card take large models.

Environment and Sealing

List the temperature extremes and whether the computer sees rain, washdown or dust. Check the rating with the GPU fitted and at the processor power you plan to run, because many systems narrow their range at 65 W.

Power and Ignition

Vehicle supplies sag at cranking and spike at load dump, so look for wide DC inputs with ignition control and reverse polarity protection. Size the supply for the GPU at full load, and check whether a separate GPU power input is needed.

Approvals for the Platform

Defence work usually asks for MIL-STD-810H shock and vibration, MIL-STD-461G emissions and MIL-STD-1275 vehicle power. Rail needs EN 50155 and EN 45545-2, and road vehicles need E-Mark. Ask for the test report as well as the mark.

Rugged GPU PC FAQs

FAQs
What is a rugged GPU computer?

A rugged GPU computer is a ruggedised computer with a discrete GPU: an NVIDIA RTX, L4 or MXM card inside a chassis built for shock, vibration, water and extreme temperatures. It runs AI and vision models on vehicles, trains, ships and outdoor sites where an integrated GPU lacks the throughput.

iGPU vs dGPU explained
Which GPUs fit in a rugged GPU computer?

It depends on the chassis. Sealed and fanless builds take MXM modules such as the RTX Ada Embedded range or Intel Arc, compact systems take 70 W low-profile or 150 W cards, and larger ones take a passively cooled NVIDIA L4, 350 W RTX cards or a 600 W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell. Rugged servers carry two GPUs.

What is NVIDIA Blackwell?
Is a rugged military GPU computer built to MIL-STD-810?

Many are tested or designed to MIL-STD-810H for shock and vibration, and military models add MIL-STD-461G emissions and MIL-STD-1275D vehicle power. A claim covers the methods and levels the maker tested, not every method in the standard, so ask for the test report and match it to the programme before choosing a mil-spec GPU computer.

MIL-STD-810G vs 810H
How do you choose a rugged GPU PC for outdoor industrial use?

Choose a sealed build. IP66 or IP69K enclosures with M12 connectors keep out rain, dust and washdown, and the best-sealed models run from −40 to 70 °C with 35 W processors. Check the rating with the GPU fitted, plan sun shading for hot sites and use PoE+ ports to power outdoor cameras from the computer, moving to PoE++ for PTZ or heated cameras.

IP69K vs IP67 explained
How is the GPU cooled in a sealed rugged computer?

MXM modules pass their heat into the chassis, the NVIDIA L4 is cooled passively and holds performance up to its 58 °C throttling point, and larger systems put the card in a separate cassette with its own air tunnel. Fan kits extend the rating where the enclosure allows, so check it at full GPU load.

Fanless GPU computers explained
When do you need a rugged GPU server?

When one GPU is not enough: camera and LiDAR fusion on autonomous trucks, large AI models or many streams at once. A rugged server carries two GPUs beside an AMD EPYC or Intel processor, with damping brackets, short-depth rack or wall mounting and a 9 to 32 V DC input with ignition control, so it runs from the vehicle supply.

TFLOPS vs TOPS explained
Can a rugged GPU computer run from vehicle or train power?

Yes. Vehicle models take wide DC inputs, up to 9 to 60 V, with ignition control, surge and reverse polarity protection, and some add a separate input for the GPU. Rail models take 110 V train supplies through isolated inputs that cover the EN 50155 interruption classes. Size the supply for the CPU and GPU at full load plus any PoE cameras; our guide to powering a GPU computer in a vehicle covers the wiring and cranking.

Do you offer a rugged laptop with a GPU?

Yes. Our rugged laptops include fully rugged models with an NVIDIA RTX A1000 MXM graphics module and a 12th Gen Core i7 in an IP65 magnesium alloy enclosure. A rugged GPU laptop suits mapping and video review in the field; these sit in our Rugged Laptops range, as this page covers fixed box and rack computers. Rugged models are also where most laptops with MXM GPUs are found today.

How much does a rugged GPU computer cost?

Prices depend on the GPU, processor, memory, storage, sealing and approvals, and on quantity, so we do not publish a rugged GPU computer price list. Send us the workload, the environment and the platform power, and we will recommend a specification and send a quote, with cheaper alternatives where they fit.

Do you offer TAA and NDAA compliant rugged GPU computers?

Yes, if the maker declares it for the model. Several makers publish TAA or NDAA declarations for selected systems, which US federal and defence contracts often require. We do not sell any of them as made in the USA or as Buy American Act compliant. Send us the contract clause and we will check it against each declaration.

What does TAA compliant mean?
Can you supply rugged GPU computers configured and tested?

Yes. Integration is standard: every rugged GPU computer we supply is configured and tested before it ships. The GPU, memory, storage and wireless modules go in first, then the operating system image, NVIDIA drivers and CUDA software, ignition and power settings and network setup, with brackets and M12 cables matched to the platform, so each system arrives ready to install.
