Fanless PCs

Fanless Computers for Dust-Free, Silent Operation

A fanless PC cools itself through its finned aluminium chassis instead of a fan, so there is nothing to draw in dust, wear out or make noise. That makes a fanless computer a natural fit for factory floors, kiosks, vehicles, control cabinets and sealed enclosures, where a failed fan means a failed system.

Options run from palm-sized fanless mini PCs and DIN rail systems to expandable models with PCIe slots, sealed waterproof versions and edge AI computers with an integrated NPU. They suit automation, transport, retail and remote sites where a computer has to run for years without attention.

Speak to a fanless computer specialist to match the processor, cooling and mounting to your installation.

Beyond Fanless PCs: Industrial, Rugged, Mini and Edge AI

Fanless PC vs Fan-Cooled PC

Every computer has to get rid of the heat its processor makes. A fan-cooled PC moves room air through the case to do it; a fanless PC conducts the heat through heat pipes and thermal pads into its metal chassis, which passes it to the surrounding air or a cabinet wall. That one difference decides where each one fits.

Fanless PC vs Fan-Cooled PC
Feature This categoryFanless PC Fan-cooled PC
Cooling path
Heat pipes and pads carry heat into a finned or flat metal chassis
Fans pull room air across a heatsink and out through vents
Dust and sealing
No vents, so the chassis closes against dust; sealed versions reach IP65 and above
Vents and filters let dust in, so the case stays open to the air
Maintenance
Nothing to clean or replace; with solid-state storage there are no moving parts
Filters to clean and fans that wear with running hours
Noise
Silent in normal use
Fan noise that rises with load
Processor power
From 6 W Atom and N-series to 65 W Core processors in larger chassis
Any processor, including high-power desktop and server parts
Graphics and AI
Integrated graphics, Core Ultra NPUs, Hailo-8 modules and Jetson
Discrete GPUs and full-length graphics cards
Operating temperature
Wide temperature models from −40 to 70 °C
Depends on clean airflow, so heat builds as filters clog
Typical install
Control cabinets, kiosks, vehicles, signage and machine frames
Offices, server rooms and filtered GPU enclosures
Choose it when It has to run unattended where dust, damp or noise rule out a fan. It needs a discrete GPU or a high-power processor in a clean, filtered space.

Most installations outside a clean, cool room suit a fanless PC. Where a project needs a full-power graphics card or a high-TDP desktop processor, a fan-cooled system with a filtered air path is the better fit.

How to Choose a Fanless Computer

A fanless computer is chosen by where it will be mounted, because the chassis has to shed all the heat the processor makes. Work through these four checks in order and the range narrows quickly.

Ambient Temperature and Space

Note the warmest air the computer will see, including a closed cabinet in summer or a sunny kiosk, and leave room around the fins. Ratings apply to the system as configured, so a higher-power processor or add-in card can lower the top of the range.

Processor Power

Match the processor to the workload. Low-power Atom and N-series chips suit gateways and signage, Core and Core Ultra handle vision and HMIs, and higher-TDP builds need a larger heatsink chassis.

I/O and Power

List every device it connects to: LAN and PoE for cameras, COM ports, CAN or isolated digital I/O. Then check the supply on site, usually 12 or 24 V DC in cabinets and vehicles, and choose a wide-range DC input.

Sealing and Mounting

Decide whether the chassis sits in a cabinet or in the open. Cabinet models fix to a wall, DIN rail or VESA bracket; sealed IP65 to IP69K models with M12 connectors go where water and dust reach the computer.

Specs to Check
Operating temperature

Standard fanless PCs typically run up to 50 or 60 °C; wide temperature models reach −40 °C to 70 °C or beyond for unheated cabinets and vehicles. What Is the Industrial Temperature Range?

Fanless PC FAQs

FAQs
What is the difference between a fanless PC and a standard PC?

A standard PC uses fans to pull air through the case, which also pulls in dust and adds a part that wears out. A fanless PC moves heat through a finned metal chassis instead, so it can be sealed, runs silently and has no moving parts to fail, which is why it suits factories, kiosks and vehicles.

Advantages of a fanless industrial PC
When is a fanless PC worth choosing over a fan-cooled PC?

Usually when the computer has to run unattended somewhere dusty, damp, hot or hard to reach. A fan-cooled PC is fine in a clean office or server room, but in a control cabinet, kiosk or vehicle a fanless design removes the most common cause of failure and the filter cleaning that goes with it.

Advantages of fanless computers
Are fanless PCs only for low-power tasks?

No. Low-power Atom and Processor N systems handle gateways and signage, but fanless designs also carry Intel Core and Core Ultra processors for machine vision, data logging and edge AI with an integrated NPU. The chassis is sized to the processor, so higher-power builds use a larger heatsink.

Do fanless PCs overheat?

Not when they are chosen and installed correctly. Each system is rated for a maximum ambient temperature, and the heat path relies on space around the fins, so it should not be boxed in or mounted against other hot equipment. Within its rating, a fanless PC runs continuously without throttling to a stop.

How does a fanless PC work?
Is a fanless PC completely silent?

Yes, in normal use. With no fans and solid-state storage there is nothing mechanical to make noise, which is why fanless computers are used in medical carts, studios, offices and quiet public spaces as well as in industry. Only an add-in card with its own fan would change that.

Can a fanless PC run inside a sealed enclosure?

Yes, as long as the enclosure can shed the heat. Because a fanless PC has no vents, sealed IP65 to IP69K versions can sit in washdown areas and outdoors on their own. Inside a closed cabinet, allow for the cabinet’s internal temperature, which is usually higher than the room.

What is a fanless mini PC?

A fanless mini PC is a compact computer, often palm-sized, cooled through its case with no fan. It suits kiosks, digital signage, gateways and machine builds where space is tight, and many models add PoE, serial ports and 4G or 5G alongside low-power Intel processors.

Essentials of fanless industrial mini PCs
Can a fanless computer run edge AI?

Yes. Intel Core Ultra processors include an NPU for on-device inference, and NVIDIA Jetson modules and Hailo-8 accelerators fit inside passively cooled systems for vision workloads. Larger models that need a full-size discrete GPU require managed airflow, so they sit outside the fanless range; lower-power MXM and embedded GPUs are the exception, as our answer on fanless GPU computers explains.

What is an NPU?
Do you offer TAA and NDAA compliant fanless PCs?

Yes, where the manufacturer declares it. Several of the fanless ranges we supply carry TAA and NDAA declarations from their makers, and many fanless systems hold UL 62368-1 or UL 61010-1 certification. No system is offered as Buy American Act compliant or made in the USA. Tell us the declaration your contract needs and we’ll check it against each model’s datasheet before we quote.

What does TAA compliant mean?
Can fanless PCs be supplied ready to install?

Yes. Integration is standard: every fanless PC is configured and tested before it ships. We fit industrial memory, storage and wireless, 4G or 5G modules, install and image the operating system and set the BIOS for your site. Brackets and power leads are matched to the site, so the system arrives ready to fit.
