Rugged and Military Power Supplies for Embedded Systems

An industrial power supply turns a raw vehicle, aircraft or cabinet supply into the clean, regulated rails an embedded computer needs, and keeps them steady through engine cranking, load dumps and brownouts. Our range covers DC-DC power supplies that mount in a PC/104 stack, isolated DC-DC converters for vehicle and airborne systems, voltage regulators for GPU computers and industrial UPS modules that hold a PC up through a power cut.

Options include wide 7 to 60 V DC inputs, 5, 12 and 15 V outputs, input-to-output isolation, supercapacitor backup and builds designed to MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704 and MIL-STD-1275 requirements, suited to military vehicles, aircraft, rolling stock and machines where the supply is noisy, the temperature range is wide and a reset is not acceptable. For stack-mounted boards, see our PC/104 power supplies and the PC/104 boards they power.

What to Specify in a Rugged Power Supply

Our power supply specialists size every unit against the supply it sees, the rails the electronics need and the standards the system has to meet. These are the choices we work through with you before recommending a range.

Input Range

12 V and 24 V vehicles dip during cranking and spike on load dumps, so pick an input range with margin either side.

Output Rails and Power

List every rail the stack needs, 3.3, 5, 12 or 15 V, and add headroom over the peak draw at the hottest temperature.

Isolation

An isolated DC-DC converter breaks ground loops between a noisy vehicle supply and sensitive electronics.

Military Standards

MIL-STD-1275 covers vehicle transients, MIL-STD-704 aircraft power and MIL-STD-461 conducted and radiated emissions.

Temperature and Cooling

Check the rated range at full load; conduction-cooled and heatsink-free designs suit sealed, fanless enclosures.
