Axiomtek AX92321-8U 8 Port PCIe USB 3.0 Card with 4x Renesas μPD720202 Independent Host Controllers

The AX92321-8U is the eight-port build in the Axiomtek AX92321 series, a USB 3.0 PCIe card with eight Type A ports served by four Renesas uPD720202 host controllers on a PCI Express x4 Gen2 interface. It suits vision and factory automation systems that connect many USB 3.0 devices to one PC.

  • Eight USB 3.0 Ports: Eight Type A ports on one bracket support SuperSpeed at 5 Gbps as well as high, full and low speed devices.
  • Four Host Controllers: Four Renesas uPD720202 controllers, compliant with USB 3.0 and Intel xHCI revision 1.0, serve the eight ports.
  • Jumper-Set Port Current: Each port is set to 900 mA or 1500 mA maximum by jumper to suit the current each device draws.
  • Per-Port Power Switching: Software turns power on or off for each port, so one device can be reset while the others keep running.
  • Three Power Inputs: Power comes from the slot, a 6-pin ATX connector or a 4-pin Molex connector, depending on the host system.

AX92321-8U Overview

Some vision and automation systems connect many USB 3.0 devices, such as cameras, scanners and instruments, to one PC and run out of ports. The AX92321-8U is the eight-port build in the Axiomtek AX92321 series, a USB 3.0 PCIe card that Axiomtek positions for vision and factory automation. We specify it for customer systems and fit it to the machines we build.

The card carries eight USB 3.0 Type A ports served by four Renesas uPD720202 host controllers, compliant with USB 3.0 and Intel xHCI revision 1.0. Ports support SuperSpeed (5 Gbps), high speed (480 Mbps), full speed (12 Mbps) and low speed (1.5 Mbps). The host interface is PCI Express x4 Gen2. Axiomtek quotes the per-port rate with all ports busy only for the four-port card, so we plan bandwidth with you when several high-rate devices share this card.

Output current is jumper-set per port at 900 mA or 1500 mA maximum, and each port’s power can be switched on or off in software for remote resets. If every device needs its own controller, the AX92321-4U gives four ports with one controller each. For Gigabit network cameras, the AX92322-4GbE offers four Ethernet ports instead.

The card draws power from the PCIe slot, with up to 20 W of total USB power output, or from the 6-pin ATX connector (5 A at 12 V or 2.5 A at 24 V) or 4-pin Molex connector (5 A at 12 V). It operates from 0 to +70 °C and stores from -20 to +80 °C. The board measures 168 x 107 mm, carries CE compliance and supports Windows 7/10 (32/64-bit) and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Official Axiomtek UK Distributor

Things Embedded is an official Axiomtek UK distributor, supplying the AX92321-8U for UK vision and automation programmes. Within the Axiomtek range the AX92321-4U gives each of its four ports a dedicated controller for full concurrent bandwidth, and the AX92322 series serves Gigabit Ethernet devices.

With eight ports the AX92321-8U sits among our PCIe USB expansion cards, our machine vision frame grabbers and our add-in cards. Where one PC must connect up to eight USB 3.0 devices from a single slot, this is the card to specify.
