Optical Fiber to SDI Overview
At the far end of a long fibre run, in a gallery, an OB truck, a remote building or a display position, the signal has to come back to SDI for monitors, recorders and switchers. The Optical Fiber to SDI from Yuan does that in broadcast, live production and pro AV installations. It is the receiver half of a fibre extender pair, converting single-mode fibre back into 3G, HD or SD-SDI.
The input is one LC connector for single-mode fibre, accepting wavelengths from 1260 to 1620 nm. The output is one SDI connector carrying the format received over the fibre: 1920 x 1080p at 60/50 and 30/25/24 fps, 1080i60/50, 720p60/50, and 480i and 576i. Up to 16 channels of 24-bit, 48 kHz embedded audio are delivered on the SDI output. Yuan rates the fibre link at up to 10 km.
The optical side uses an MSA-compatible SFP port, so modules can be swapped for longer reach or a different connector, and Yuan describes it as compatible with other SDI-fibre equipment. The Optical Fiber to SDI is plug and play and runs from a 7.5V to 15V DC input. It pairs with the SDI to Optical Fiber transmitter at the source end. If the destination is an HDMI display, the SDI to HDMI converter can follow it, and the SDI Splitter can share the received feed with four destinations.
In practice the receiver sits in the destination rack beside the equipment it feeds. We supply the Optical Fiber to SDI configured and tested with the fibre, sources and displays it will connect to, normally as a matched pair with its transmitter.
