What Does ISR Mean in the Military?

In the military, ISR stands for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance: the collection, processing and analysis of information about an area or target to support decisions. It is carried out by satellites, aircraft, drones, ships and ground sensors.

The Short Answer

ISR brings together three activities. Surveillance and reconnaissance gather data, from cameras, radar and signals receivers; intelligence is what analysts and software extract from that data. The aim is to give commanders an accurate, timely picture of what is happening.

Why It Matters
