What Is cULus?

cULus is a UL safety mark showing that a product has been tested and certified by UL Solutions to both Canadian (c) and US (us) safety standards. One certification covers both markets, and UL inspects the factory on an ongoing basis. It is accepted by US OSHA rules and Canadian electrical codes.

01

What the cULus mark means

cULus is a UL safety mark showing that a product has been tested and certified by UL Solutions to both Canadian and US safety standards. The small “c” to the left of the UL logo stands for Canada and the “us” to the right stands for the United States, so one certification covers both markets.

The mark matters because electrical equipment installed in North American workplaces is expected to carry a recognised safety certification. In the US, OSHA rules call for equipment to be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), and UL Solutions is one. In Canada, provincial electrical codes require approval by a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and UL Solutions is accredited for that too. Inspectors, insurers and end customers look for the mark on the nameplate.

A cULus mark is not a one-off test. The manufacturer’s factory is visited by UL inspectors on an ongoing basis to check that production still matches the product that was certified. The mark normally sits on the rating label next to the word Listed or Recognized and a UL file number, which is the reference you use to check the certificate.

UL, cUL and cULus: the marks compared

The letters around the logo tell you which country’s standards the product was assessed against, and the type of mark tells you how it may be used.

Mark Issued by Standards met What it tells you
UL Listed (or ULus) UL Solutions US Complete product certified for the US market
cUL Listed UL Solutions Canada Complete product certified for the Canadian market only
cULus Listed UL Solutions Canada and US Complete product certified for both markets
cURus Recognized UL Solutions Canada and US Component for use inside another certified product, subject to conditions of use
cCSAus CSA Group Canada and US Equivalent certification from CSA, also an NRTL
cETLus Intertek Canada and US Equivalent certification from Intertek, also an NRTL
CE Manufacturer’s declaration EU directives Conformity with EU law, usually self-declared, no North American approval

For a buyer in North America, cULus, cCSAus and cETLus are accepted the same way: each shows certification to the same published standards by an accredited laboratory. UL Solutions has also been introducing a newer UL Certified mark that names the countries covered, so both styles appear on products in service.

FAQ · 01
Is an ETL mark as good as a UL mark?
Yes. Intertek, which issues the ETL mark, and UL Solutions are both OSHA-recognised NRTLs and test to the same published standards, such as UL 62368-1. An ETL Listed product meets the same requirements as a UL Listed one, and cETLus covers Canada as cULus does.

Listed vs Recognized

Listed applies to a complete, stand-alone product, such as a computer, a power supply or a switch, that has been assessed for its intended use. Recognized applies to a component, such as a power supply module, relay or fan, assessed for use inside a larger product. A Recognized component carries conditions of use, and the end product still needs its own certification.

The difference matters most to control panel builders. A panel built to UL 508A is easiest to certify when the parts inside are Listed or Recognized for that use. Our white paper on how UL-certified computers help control panel builders covers this in more detail.

Which standards sit behind the mark

cULus is a mark, not a standard. The certificate names the standard the product was tested against, and that depends on what the product is.

  • //
Computers and network equipment. IEC 62368-1, published in North America as UL 62368-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1, covers IT, audio-visual and communications equipment.
  • //
Measurement, control and test equipment. UL 61010-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1, with Part 2-201 for programmable controllers and other control equipment.
  • //
Industrial control equipment. UL 508 in the US and CSA C22.2 No. 14 in Canada for devices such as motor controllers and relays, and UL 508A for complete industrial control panels.
  • //
Hazardous locations. UL 121201 and CSA C22.2 No. 213 for non-incendive equipment approved for Class I, Division 2 areas.

cULus vs CE

The two marks answer different questions. CE shows that the manufacturer declares the product meets EU directives, such as the Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS Directives, and in most cases no independent laboratory is involved. cULus shows that a third party has tested the product to North American standards and keeps inspecting the factory. A product sold on both sides of the Atlantic usually carries both, and in Great Britain the UKCA mark is accepted alongside CE.

In our range, many industrial Ethernet switches list UL 61010-1 certification, some with Class I, Division 2 as well, and several industrial panel PCs list cULus certification to UL 62368-1. Always check the product’s own datasheet and certificate, because approvals differ between models in the same series.

Quick answers on cULus

cULus: common questions

What does cULus stand for?

Canada, Underwriters Laboratories, United States. The c and us show that UL assessed the product against Canadian and US standards. UL originally stood for Underwriters Laboratories, now UL Solutions.

What is the difference between cUL and cULus?

Country coverage. cUL covers Canada only. cULus covers Canada and the US with one certification, so it is the more useful mark for equipment sold across North America.

Is cULus valid in Canada?

Yes. UL Solutions is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, so cULus and cUL marks are accepted by Canadian electrical inspectors in the same way as CSA marks.

Is cULus the same as UL Listed?

It includes it. A cULus Listed product is UL Listed for the US and also certified for Canada. A plain UL Listed mark without the c covers the US only.

How do I check a cULus certification?

Use the file number. The nameplate or datasheet gives a UL file number, usually starting with E. Search it in UL Product iQ to see the certified models and the standard they were tested to.

We supply the compliance documents that come with each system, and we can shortlist computers, panel PCs and switches whose datasheets list the North American approvals your installation needs.
