Diamond Systems EPSM-8G2F Small 8+2 Port Managed Layer 3 Ethernet Switch Module with Dual 2.5G SFP Support

Robots, drones and small vehicles often carry a handful of cameras, sensors and controllers that all need a managed network, with little space for a boxed switch. The EPSM-8G2F is Diamond Systems’ 8+2 port managed Ethernet switch module for that brief, with the switching core almost fully encapsulated on the module, so a custom carrier board only needs the last inch of magnetics and I/O connectors.

The EPSM-8G2F provides eight 10/100/1000 Mbps copper ports and two 2.5 Gbps ports routed to SFP sockets on the carrier. Diamond also builds a copper version with 2.5G PHYs in place of the SFP links, ordered as 9133230, which suits all-copper networks. High-speed connectors carry every signal to the carrier, and the module takes 5 V DC from it. A Vitesse VSC7428 switch IC handles the switching.

Layer 3 managed switching software is built in, configured through a web interface or a serial port. Features include VLANs, MSTP, RSTP and STP, link aggregation, IGMP snooping, port mirroring, IPv4 and IPv6 static routing, QoS with port and queue policers, storm control, IEEE 802.1X with RADIUS accounting, JSON-RPC, 802.1Qbb priority flow control and jumbo frames. The EPSM-12G2F scales to 24 gigabit ports with two SFP uplinks, and the EPSM-10GX4 adds 10G SFI ports for higher-bandwidth designs.

The EPSM-8G2F operates from -40 to +85 °C. A heat sink accessory provides free air cooling, so no forced air is needed. Diamond offers the module on its EPS-8002F carrier with SFP sockets as a complete board, and lists a DK-EPSM8G2F-01 development kit as coming soon, with a carrier, cable kit and design guide. Diamond also designs custom carrier boards for the EPSM-8G2F where a project needs one.
