What Is a Multi-SIM Router?

A multi-SIM router is a cellular router with two or more SIM card slots. In its simplest form, one modem switches to a backup SIM when the first fails. Routers with a modem per SIM can use every connection at once, for load balancing or bonding, which is what high-bandwidth, always-on applications need.

The Short Answer

Many routers and industrial PCs offer one or two SIM slots, often shared with a single modem. Running four connections at once needs four modems and four SIM slots, which in turn needs a computer with enough expansion slots and front-accessible SIM trays, plus the cooling to handle the modems.

  • //
Modems vs SIM slots Simultaneous use needs one modem per SIM.
  • //
Network diversity Use SIMs from different carriers for better coverage.
  • //
Antennas Each modem needs its own antennas, ideally external on vessels and vehicles.
  • //
Rugged build Fanless, wide-temperature hardware for cabinets with little airflow.

Why It Matters

Our bonding vs load balancing FAQ explains what to do with multiple connections, and our industrial cellular computer guide covers integrating modems. The bonded cellular router case study uses a fanless PC with four modems and four SIMs.
