Sintrones EMUC-B202-W1 USB to Dual Isolated CAN 2.0B Adapter with DB9 Connectors

The EMUC-B202-W1 is the CAN 2.0B build of the Sintrones EMUC-B202 series: a Mini PCIe card that adds two isolated CAN ports over USB 2.0, brought out as DB9 through the supplied cables. It runs basic CAN 2.0B firmware for general vehicle and machine buses, at 100 to 1000 kbit/s from -40 °C to 85 °C.

  • CAN 2.0B Firmware: Basic CAN 2.0B firmware, backward compatible with CAN 2.0A, for general vehicle and machine buses handled as standard CAN frames.
  • Two Isolated CAN Ports: Two isolated CAN ports with 2.5 kV HiPOT protection, brought out as DB9 connectors through the supplied cables.
  • 100 to 1000 kbit/s Baud Rates: Baud rates of 100, 125, 250, 500, 800 and 1000 kbit/s, with up to 6000 received messages per second.
  • Filtering and Listen-Only Mode: Acceptance filtering, listen-only mode, error status and saved configuration, with Linux SocketCAN support through an additional driver.
  • Wide Temperature Mini PCIe Card: A full-size Mini PCIe card on USB 2.0, drawing 1.62 W at 3.3 V and rated from -40 °C to 85 °C.

EMUC-B202-W1 Overview

Many vehicles and mobile machines run CAN 2.0B between their controllers, and a computer that logs or acts on that traffic needs an isolated way onto the bus. The Sintrones EMUC-B202-W1 is the CAN 2.0B build of the EMUC-B202 series: a Mini PCIe card with two isolated CAN ports, running the basic CAN 2.0B firmware for general vehicle and machine buses where the application works with standard CAN frames.

The card connects to the host over USB 2.0 and presents two CAN 2.0B ports, backward compatible with CAN 2.0A, at 100, 125, 250, 500 (default), 800 or 1000 kbit/s; 50 kbit/s is not supported. It receives up to 6000 CAN messages per second, with an acceptance filter, listen-only mode, error status and a configuration that is kept after a hardware reboot. Firmware upgrade is supported, and an additional driver adds Linux SocketCAN support.

Each port leaves the card on a header and becomes a DB9 connector through the supplied cable, with CAN-L on pin 2, ground on pin 3 and CAN-H on pin 7. Termination is set by jumper. A third mounting hole and a USB pin header allow installation away from a Mini Card socket. The same hardware runs SAE J1939 firmware as the EMUC-B202-W2 and CANopen firmware as the EMUC-B202-W3, so the choice comes down to the protocol on the bus.

The card draws 1.62 W (490 mA at 3.3 V) and runs from -40 °C to 85 °C, with storage from -55 °C to 95 °C, 5 G vibration from 7 to 2000 Hz and 50 G shock at 0.5 ms. Sintrones lists 2.5 kV HiPOT protection to IEC 60950-1, 2.5 kV surge protection to EN 61000-4-5 and ESD protection to EN 61000-4-2 at 15 kV air and 8 kV contact. It suits Sintrones computers with a free full-size Mini PCIe slot that carries USB 2.0, and we fit and test the EMUC-B202-W1 in the host computer as part of the build, with the DB9 cables brought out to the enclosure.
