What Is an IIoT Gateway?

An IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) gateway is a rugged edge computer that connects industrial equipment, such as PLCs, sensors and machines, to a network or the cloud. It collects their data, translates between industrial protocols, processes and secures it at the edge, and forwards the results.

01

The Short Answer

Industrial equipment speaks a mix of older fieldbus and modern network protocols. The gateway sits between that equipment and the wider network, turning machine data into a standard form and sending on only what matters, often after processing it locally.

  • //
Data acquisition Reads values from connected equipment.
  • //
Protocol translation Converts industrial protocols into a standard format.
  • //
Edge computing Processes data locally to cut latency and bandwidth.
  • //
Security Encrypts and filters data before it leaves the site.

Why It Matters

Gateways have to survive where the machines are. Our factory gateway case study and smart farming case study show two very different sites, and our industrial IoT gateways cover the range.
