IP66 enclosure
IP66 means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction. The fanless aluminium body has no vents for water or dust to find. Our IP ratings guide compares the levels.
The Sintrones SBOX-2624P-IP66 seals an AMD Ryzen Embedded computer in an IP66 enclosure with M12 PoE and sealed connectors, rated -30 to 60 °C and compliant with EN 50155 for outdoor, washdown and rail deployment.
Water and dust end most computers quickly. A washdown line, an outdoor cabinet or a dockside enclosure finds every seam and vent, and a standard industrial PC is not built to keep them out.
The Sintrones SBOX-2624P-IP66 is a waterproof industrial PC sealed to IP66, with an AMD Ryzen Embedded processor, sealed M12 and M8 connectors, and a fanless aluminium body rated from −30 to 60 °C. We supply and configure it for outdoor, washdown and rail sites, where the computer has to sit beside the cameras and sensors it serves rather than in a cabinet down the line.
IP66 is the right rating for many of those sites, but not all of them. This article sets out what the sealing covers, where its limits are, and how to decide whether IP66 is enough for yours.
One sealed configuration: the IP66 version of the Sintrones SBOX-2624, with M12 PoE and sealed M8 I/O.

The two M12 X-coded ports deliver PoE at up to 15 W per port, so the system can power the cameras or sensors it sits beside over one sealed cable each. It sits within our wider range of PoE computers.
The enclosure only holds its IP66 rating if every connection out in the weather is sealed too. Here is what the SBOX-2624P-IP66 seals, and the points to plan around.
IP66 means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction. The fanless aluminium body has no vents for water or dust to find. Our IP ratings guide compares the levels.
Two RS-232/422/485 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, three digital inputs and four digital outputs use sealed M8 A-coded connectors, for sensors and controllers out on the site.
Two GbE ports deliver PoE at up to 15 W per port (PSE Class 3) from a 30 W budget, on sealed M12 X-coded connectors, so each camera or sensor runs on one sealed cable.
The two HDMI 2.0b outputs and the two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports are not sealed to IP66. They suit commissioning and service, or a protected installation, rather than permanent exposure.
The SBOX-2624P-IP66 runs from −30 to 60 °C and stores from −40 to 80 °C, with passive cooling through the aluminium body. For planning a sealed installation more widely, see our guide to edge computers for confined, sealed and waterproof enclosures.
IP66 covers rain, spray and hose-down cleaning. Run through these checks before you specify it for a site.
IP66 protects against powerful water jets from any direction. If the computer could be submerged, even briefly, look at our IP67 computers instead.
Cleaning with hot water at high pressure close to the enclosure calls for IP69K, which tests exactly that. See our IP69K computers for those lines.
Power, Ethernet, serial, DIO and USB 2.0 cabling out in the weather must use sealed connectors. Plan for the HDMI and USB 3.2 ports to stay inside protection.
The SBOX-2624P-IP66 is rated from −30 to 60 °C. A site that runs hotter or colder than that needs a different model, whatever its IP rating.
It is a wall-mount design weighing 2 kg, built to sit beside the cameras it powers. Check the mounting surface and cable runs before you commit.
The 9–36 V DC input, through a terminal block, covers nominal 12 V and 24 V supplies, with over-voltage and reverse-polarity protection for unstable vehicle or solar power.
Sites where water, dust and temperature swings would finish a vented computer, and the system has to live next to the equipment it runs.
Sealed operation for traffic, surveillance and smart-city cabinets exposed to weather.

Resists spray and humidity around water, ports and offshore equipment.
EN 50155 and EMC compliance for rolling stock and trackside installation.
View rangeThe SBOX-2624P-IP66 is compliant with EN 50155 and EN 50121-3-2 (EMC) for rolling stock, and its wide 9–36 V DC input and temperature range suit trackside and in-vehicle installation. Because it has no fan or vents, the same sealing that keeps water out also keeps out the dust that clogs a fanned computer in a vehicle.
IP66 is the rating above IP65 — dust-tight, and protected against powerful water jets. It is the standard specification for outdoor industrial computing in storm-exposed locations, marine deck equipment and light wash-down food handling, equivalent to NEMA 4 / 4X in North American markets.
IP67 means an enclosure is dust-tight and protected against temporary submersion in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes. It is the standard rating for field-deployed equipment that might be briefly immersed — agricultural sensors, military field hardware, marine bilge installations — equivalent to NEMA 6 in North American markets.
IP69K means an enclosure is dust-tight and protected against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets per DIN 40050-9 — 80°C water at 8—10 MPa from close range. It is the food and beverage industry standard for sanitary wash-down on both sides of the Atlantic — and it does NOT imply submersion protection.
An M12 X-coded connector is the 8-pin M12 coding for Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Its four twisted pairs are separated by a cross-shaped shield that controls crosstalk at high speed, and it can carry Power over Ethernet with a suitable cable. It is defined in IEC 61076-2-109.
M8 and M12 are circular industrial connectors named after their thread size: 8 mm and 12 mm. M8 is smaller, with 3 to 8 pins, and suits compact sensors and low-power signals. M12 is larger, with up to 12 pins and more coding options, and carries higher power and Ethernet, which is why industrial computers use it.
PoE delivers up to about 15 W per port (802.3af), PoE+ up to about 30 W (802.3at), and PoE++ up to 60 W or 90 W (802.3bt), at around 48 V DC. Some power is lost in the cable, so the figure available at the device is a little lower than at the source.
Fanless computers cool themselves passively, through a finned heatsink chassis and heat pipes, instead of a fan. With no moving parts and no airflow drawing in dirt, they are more reliable in dusty or vibrating places, completely silent, low maintenance and easy to seal, which is why they are the standard choice for industrial and embedded use.
Tell us the ingress rating you need, the I/O and the environment, and we'll confirm whether the SBOX-2624P-IP66 fits or recommend an alternative. We configure and test Sintrones systems for outdoor, washdown and rail sites.
