What Is a Truck Roll?

A truck roll is sending a technician in a vehicle to a site to install, check or fix equipment. The term is common in telecoms, utilities and field services, where each visit costs labour, fuel and time. Reducing truck rolls, through remote monitoring and management, is one of the main ways operators cut costs.

The Short Answer

Many visits are for simple checks or restarts that could be done remotely. Equipment with its own management link, such as a cellular modem, and remote management tools lets engineers test, diagnose and recover systems from a desk, saving the visit for jobs that genuinely need hands on site.

  • //
Independent connectivity A cellular link that works when the main network does not.
  • //
Remote testing Run speed and line checks from the office.
  • //
Out-of-band management Restart and recover systems that have stopped responding.
  • //
Reliable hardware Fanless industrial builds that rarely need attention.
