Jetson Orin NX vs AGX Orin: Which Module to Choose
The Jetson Orin NX and AGX Orin are the mid-range and high-end of the Orin family. The Orin NX offers up to 157 TOPS in a compact, low-power module; the AGX Orin up to 275 TOPS with far more memory and I/O. Here is how they differ, and which one fits.
The Short Answer
The Jetson Orin NX and Jetson AGX Orin are the two upper tiers of NVIDIA’s Orin family. The Orin NX is the compact, low-power mid-range module at up to 157 TOPS; the AGX Orin is the high-end module at up to 275 TOPS, with far more memory, more I/O, and a higher power ceiling. Choose the AGX Orin when the workload genuinely needs the extra compute, memory, or interfaces — otherwise the Orin NX is smaller, cooler, and lower-cost.
The Two Tiers of Orin
Both modules use the same NVIDIA Ampere-generation architecture and the same JetPack software, so the difference between them is scale, not generation. The Orin NX packs serious AI performance into a small, power-efficient module aimed at embedded products.
The AGX Orin steps up to roughly 1.75 times the compute, several times the memory, and a wider set of high-speed interfaces, in a physically larger module with a higher power budget. They sit either side of the line where a design stops being constrained by size and power and starts being constrained by how much it has to process.
Side by Side
| Specification | Jetson Orin NX | Jetson AGX Orin |
|---|---|---|
| AI performance | Up to 157 TOPS | Up to 275 TOPS |
| Memory | 8 or 16 GB | 32 or 64 GB |
| Power envelope | 10 to 40 W | 15 to 60 W |
| CPU | Up to 8-core Arm | 12-core Arm |
| Module connector | 260-pin (shared with Orin Nano) | 699-pin |
| Form factor | Compact | Larger |
Both run the same JetPack stack, so an application can be developed against one and moved to the other, within the limits of memory and I/O.
Where the AGX Orin Pulls Ahead
- 01Memory
- 32 to 64 GB against the NX maximum of 16 GB runs larger models, or several at once.
- 02AI compute
- Up to 275 TOPS against 157, for heavier or more concurrent inference.
- 03I/O
- More native high-speed I/O — PCIe, cameras, networking — for multi-sensor systems.
- 04Headroom
- A higher power ceiling sustains demanding, continuous workloads.
When the Orin NX Is the Right Choice
More performance is not automatically better; it costs size, power, heat, and money. For a great many edge AI products — single or few-camera vision, a single model running in real time, a compact or power-conscious enclosure — the Orin NX has performance to spare and the AGX Orin would be over-specified.
The NX is also the easier module to cool and to fit. The right question is not which is more powerful, but whether the workload actually needs what the AGX Orin adds.
They Are Not Interchangeable
One practical point: the two modules are not drop-in replacements for each other. The Orin NX uses the smaller 260-pin connector it shares with the Orin Nano, while the AGX Orin uses a larger 699-pin connector, so each needs a Jetson carrier board designed for it.
Moving between the two tiers is a board change, not a swap, which is worth knowing before a design commits to one. The upside is that the Orin NX and Orin Nano share a connector, so a design can often scale within that pair without a new board.
Choosing and Deploying
In practice the decision comes down to memory and concurrency first, then I/O, then power and size. If a single model and a few sensors fit comfortably on the Orin NX, there is no reason to pay for the AGX Orin. When the workload, the model size, or the sensor count outgrows the NX, the AGX Orin is the next step.
As the system integrator, we size the module to the application and build the platform around it. Our guide to choosing a Jetson module walks the whole lineup, and the Orin Nano Super covers the tier below.

Jetson Orin Nano vs Orin NX: What Is the Difference?
The Orin Nano delivers up to 67 TOPS in 7 to 25 W with 4 to 8 GB, suited to entry-level, low-power vision. The Orin NX steps up to 157 TOPS in 10 to 40 W with 8 to 16 GB, for multi-camera and heavier inference. Choose the NX when one camera or one model is not enough.
