DFI ALF51-TN-86E40 Quad-Core Intel Atom x5-E3940 Femto-ITX Embedded Board with Dual GbE and Extended Temperature

Outdoor information displays, vehicle HMIs and roadside gateways need the memory of an indoor signage player and the temperature rating of a telemetry unit. The ALF51-TN-86E40 is a 1.8″ Femto-ITX embedded board in the DFI ALF51 series that combines both: 8 GB of memory down, the quad-core Intel Atom x5-E3940 and a -40 to 85 °C rating.

The x5-E3940 has four Apollo Lake cores at 1.6 GHz with a 1.8 GHz burst in a 9.5 W TDP, and Intel HD Graphics drives a DP++ output at up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. The 8 GB of single-channel LPDDR4 at 2400 MHz and 64 GB of eMMC are soldered to the board, so there are no sockets to loosen under vibration. DFI lists Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 64-bit and Linux with UEFI boot, and a firmware TPM 2.0 and watchdog timer are included.

Two GbE ports on Intel I210 controllers connect the display or gateway to the network and a local device. Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports and a USB 2.0 header take a touch controller or modem, an RS-232/422/485 header reaches a vehicle or site controller, and an 8-bit DIO header monitors inputs such as door or alarm signals. The full-size mini PCIe socket can hold a Wi-Fi module.

The ALF51-TN-86E40 runs from 12 V DC on a terminal block and cools passively across -40 to 85 °C, with CE, FCC and RoHS compliance. The ALF51-BN-86E40 is the same 8 GB build for indoor use at 0 to 60 °C, and the ALF51-TN-46E40 keeps the -40 to 85 °C rating with 4 GB.
