In-Vehicle Computers

Rugged In-Vehicle Computers for Fleets, Buses and Mobile Machinery

An in-vehicle computer is a fanless PC built for a platform that moves. It starts and stops with the ignition, runs straight from the 12 or 24 V vehicle supply and rides through cranking dips, load dumps, shock and the temperature swings of a cab or engine bay.

A rugged vehicle computer adds what fleets need on the road: CAN bus for vehicle data, PoE+ ports for cameras, GNSS positioning and 4G or 5G with dual SIMs, with locking M12 connectors and E-Mark type approval for road use.

Choose from small vehicle PCs for telematics, multi-camera recorders for buses and coaches, and Jetson or Core Ultra systems that run AI on board for driver assistance and autonomous machinery.

Beyond In-Vehicle Computers: Rugged, Rail, Mission and Jetson

In-Vehicle Computer vs Industrial PC vs Consumer Car PC

An in-vehicle computer shares its fanless, wide-temperature design with an industrial PC. What sets it apart is the vehicle: a supply that sags when the engine cranks, an ignition key that decides when it runs, and type approval before it can be fitted to a road vehicle. The table also shows why a consumer car PC is no substitute.

Choose it when It is fitted to a road vehicle, bus, truck or mobile machine and runs from its supply. It is fixed in a cabinet or on a machine with a steady DC or mains supply. It is a hobby media or navigation build in a private car.

An industrial vehicle computer earns its place wherever the platform moves and draws its power from its own battery. For fixed sites along the route, such as depots and roadside cabinets, a standard industrial PC is usually the better fit.

Recording cameras on board? A mobile NVR is the vehicle computer built for that job, with PoE camera ports and ignition control.

Where In-Vehicle Computer Systems Are Used

The same building blocks of ignition control, vehicle power and rugged I/O serve very different fleets. These are the jobs we see most often, from a fleet management computer in a delivery van to a multi-camera AI system on a haul truck.

Buses and Coaches

Onboard CCTV, passenger counting, passenger information and ticketing, often on one computer that records every PoE camera and reports over 4G or 5G.

Police and Emergency Vehicles

Evidential video, license plate recognition and a live link to the control room, with the computer started by the ignition and shut down after the crew has gone.

Fleet Telematics and Logistics

Position, driver behavior and engine data sent back to base over cellular, for vans, trucks and trailers on long routes.

Driver Assistance and Autonomy

GMSL cameras, lidar and radar fused on NVIDIA Jetson or a discrete GPU for ADAS, autonomous shuttles and remote teleoperation.

Mining, Construction and Agriculture

Haul trucks, excavators and tractors that shake, flex and get hosed down, where sealed IP67 systems and M12 connectors earn their place.

Refuse and Municipal Vehicles

Bin detection, kerbside cameras and route logging on refuse trucks, street sweepers and gritters that stop and start all day.

How to Choose a Vehicle PC

Work from the vehicle outwards: where the computer is mounted, what it has to run, the supply it draws from and the approvals it must carry.

Mounting Location

A computer behind a dashboard panel or in a cab locker can be a fanless box with standard ports; one on a chassis rail, roof or boom needs IP67 sealing and M12 connectors. Check the temperature range at the mounting point, not in the cab.

Workload and Cameras

Count the cameras and the software. Telematics and gateways run on Atom or Arm processors, multi-camera recording wants a Core i5 or i7 with PoE+, and onboard AI needs a Core Ultra NPU, an NVIDIA Jetson module or an MXM GPU.

Vehicle Supply

Match the input to the platform: 12 or 24 V on road vehicles, 48 to 110 V on forklifts and rail, and 28 V to MIL-STD-1275 on military vehicles. Set the ignition delay, and add hold-up where the supply drops out.

Approvals and Rollout

Confirm E-Mark for road vehicles and any operator approvals such as ITxPT, then plan the rollout: one locked build, long availability from the manufacturer, and the same brackets and cables for every vehicle in the fleet.

Specs to Check
Ignition Control

Powers the system on with the key and holds it up for a set delay after switch-off, so it shuts down cleanly without draining the battery. What Is Ignition Control on a Vehicle Computer?

In-Vehicle Computer FAQs

FAQs
What is an in-vehicle computer?

An in-vehicle computer is a PC designed to be fitted to a road vehicle, bus, truck or mobile machine and run from its electrical system. It starts with the ignition, accepts a wide DC input, survives shock and vibration and connects to cameras, the CAN bus and cellular networks. You will also see it called a vehicle PC, an automotive PC or an automotive embedded computer.

Why does an in-vehicle PC need ignition control?

Without it, a computer either drains the battery while the engine is off or loses data when the power is cut. Ignition control watches the key signal, starts the system with the engine and keeps it running for a set delay after switch-off, so recordings close, uploads finish and the operating system shuts down cleanly.

Does an in-vehicle computer need E-Mark certification?

For electronics fitted to road vehicles in Europe, E-Mark type approval under UN ECE R10 is the usual requirement, and many fleet operators and bodybuilders ask for it worldwide. It shows the computer will not interfere with the vehicle’s own systems. Off-road machines, rail vehicles and military platforms follow other standards.

E-Mark certification explained
What voltage does a vehicle PC run on?

Cars and vans run on 12 V and most trucks and buses on 24 V, so vehicle PCs usually accept 9 to 36 V or 9 to 60 V DC. Electric forklifts and rail vehicles can need 48 to 110 V inputs, and military vehicles use 28 V to MIL-STD-1275. Check that the input also covers starting dips and charging surges. A discrete GPU raises the current draw sharply, so read our guide to vehicle power for GPU computers before sizing the wiring and fuse.

What is MIL-STD-1275?
How does an in-vehicle computer cope with a power cut?

Most ride through short dips on their wide-range input. For longer drops, or to finish writing files after the supply fails, choose a model with a supercapacitor or battery UPS that holds the system up long enough to shut down safely. Supercapacitors suit vehicles best, as they tolerate heat, cold and frequent cycling.

Supercapacitor vs battery UPS
Can a vehicle PC read data from the CAN bus?

Yes. Most in-vehicle computers have one or two isolated CAN or CAN FD ports, and many support J1939 for trucks, buses and off-highway machines. That lets the computer log engine, fuel and door data, read fault codes or feed driver behavior into telematics software. SocketCAN drivers on Linux make the ports simple to use in code.

What is SocketCAN?
What connectivity does a fleet computer need?

Most fleets want 4G or 5G with dual SIM sockets, so the vehicle stays connected when one network drops, plus GNSS for position and Wi-Fi for depot uploads. Add Bluetooth for driver devices and, for autonomous or survey work, RTK positioning. Fit external antennas on the roof rather than relying on internal ones.

4G LTE and 5G cellular explained
Can in-vehicle computers run AI on board?

Yes. Core Ultra processors with an NPU handle driver monitoring and plate recognition on a few cameras, while NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Thor modules, Qualcomm IQ9 and MXM GPUs run multi-camera detection for driver assistance and autonomous machines. GMSL camera inputs keep latency low and cables long enough to reach the corners of a vehicle.

GMSL2 and GMSL3 explained
Do you offer TAA and NDAA compliant in-vehicle computers?

Yes, where the manufacturer declares it. Several in-vehicle ranges carry TAA and NDAA declarations from their makers, which matters for US federal, transit and defense fleets. None of the vehicle PCs on this page is sold as Buy American Act compliant or made in the USA. Tell us which declaration your contract needs, and we’ll check it against each datasheet.

What does TAA compliant mean?
Can you supply in-vehicle computers configured and tested?

Yes. Integration is standard: every in-vehicle computer we supply is configured and tested before it ships. We fit memory, storage and 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi modules, install and image the operating system, set the ignition timing and BIOS for the vehicle, and match brackets, antennas and power leads, so each system arrives ready to fit.
