Two Ways to Prevent Ignition in Hazardous Areas
Intrinsically safe equipment stays safe even under fault conditions, while non-incendive equipment only avoids ignition in normal operation, which limits it to Division 2 or Zone 2.

Class 1 Division 2 is a North American rating for areas where flammable gases or vapours are expected only under abnormal conditions, such as a leak or equipment failure.
How Hazardous Areas Are Zoned Under ATEX
ATEX zones grade an area by how often an explosive atmosphere is present, from Zone 0 where gas is continuous to Zone 2 where it is unlikely, with Zones 20 to 22 for dust.
