What Is TAA Compliance?

TAA compliance means a product is wholly manufactured or substantially transformed in the United States or a TAA-designated country, as required by the Trade Agreements Act for many US federal and defense purchases. It is about country of origin, not US content levels, which is what the separate Buy American Act covers.

TAA vs the Buy American Act

The two are often confused. The Buy American Act sets a domestic-content threshold and a price preference for US-made goods. The Trade Agreements Act waives Buy American for procurements above a dollar threshold, provided the end product comes from the US or a designated country. For commercial-off-the-shelf electronics, a contract usually specifies TAA compliance.

Why It Matters for Edge AI Hardware

Edge-AI modules and computers are often built across several countries, so the same model can be compliant or not depending on where a given unit was made. For a program that specifies TAA, the determination has to be made at the part-number and country level, and documented.
