Diamond Systems DS-MPE-SER4OPT : DS-MPE-OPT4485 Rugged 4-Port Opto-Isolated RS-485 Serial mPCIe Card

The DS-MPE-OPT4485 is the four-port RS-485 build in the Diamond Systems DS-MPE-SER4OPT series, an opto-isolated serial MiniCard with four RS-485 ports at up to 10 Mbps in a full-size PCIe MiniCard socket. It suits multidrop field networks and long cable runs where isolation protects the host from ground differences.

  • Four Isolated RS-485 Ports: All four ports preconfigured for RS-485 at up to 10 Mbps, with each pair isolated by up to 500 V from system ground.
  • Selectable Termination: RS-485 line termination is jumper selectable, and Diamond Systems can fit 0 ohm resistors in place of jumpers for high-vibration installations.
  • PCIe MiniCard Interface: Quad XR17V354 UART on a full-size PCIe MiniCard, with 16C550-compatible ports and 256-byte transmit and receive FIFOs.
  • Latching Connectors: Two miniature latching connectors with two ports each, with the CK-SER4M cable kit included in the box.
  • 3.3 V, -40 to 85 °C: Runs at 0.462 W from the 3.3 V MiniCard supply across -40 to 85 °C at 5 to 95% humidity, non-condensing.

DS-MPE-OPT4485 Overview

RS-485 networks often run long cables between nodes, and every meter of cable is a chance for ground potential to differ from one end to the other. The DS-MPE-OPT4485 is the four-port RS-485 build in the Diamond Systems DS-MPE-SER4OPT series, an opto-isolated serial MiniCard that brings four isolated RS-485 ports to any host with a full-size PCIe MiniCard socket.

The card is built around a quad XR17V354 UART with a PCIe interface. Each port is 16C550 compatible with 256-byte transmit and receive FIFOs and an SP336 multi-mode transceiver, reaching 10 Mbps in RS-485 mode. Using the MiniCard socket leaves the host’s PC/104 or PCIe/104 stack free for other I/O modules.

All four ports on the DS-MPE-OPT4485 are preconfigured for RS-485, with jumper-selectable termination for the ends of the bus. Each pair of ports is isolated by up to 500 V from system ground, through integrated isolated power and data components, careful layout and an insulation film on the underside. Two miniature latching connectors carry two ports each, and the CK-SER4M cable kit is supplied. The DS-MPE-OPT4232 has four RS-232 ports instead, and the DS-MPE-OPT4M22 splits the card into two RS-232 and two RS-485 ports.

Power is 3.3 V DC at 0.462 W. The DS-MPE-OPT4485 operates from -40 to 85 °C at 5 to 95% humidity, non-condensing, and can be custom-configured with 0 ohm resistors in place of jumper blocks where vibration is high. Drivers support Windows 7, XP, Vista and 2000 and Linux 2.6 kernels, and the card is RoHS compliant.
