DFI ASL253 Intel Atom x7000RE 4" x86 SBCs with Six COM Ports and -40 to 80 °C

Serial ports have not gone away in industrial equipment. Meters, drives, printers and legacy controllers still expect RS-232 or RS-485 on a screw-down DB9, and a board that needs USB adapters for each one adds cables and failure points. The DFI ASL253 series answers that with six COM ports on a 165 x 115 mm EPIC-size board, alongside modern networking and an Intel Amston Lake processor rated from -40 to 80 °C.

Every ASL253 board has 16 GB of LPDDR5-4800 soldered to the board, so there is no SO-DIMM to work loose under vibration. Intel UHD Graphics with up to 32 execution units drives an HDMI 1.4b output and an internal panel connector that takes eDP by default or dual-channel LVDS, and DFI lists quad display support. Intel TCC is supported for time-sensitive control, and the Intel I226 2.5GbE controllers offer TSN as a project option.

The range has two builds. ASL253-x7835RE carries the eight-core Intel Atom x7835RE at 1.3 to 3.6 GHz for gateways and controllers running several services at once. ASL253-x7433RE uses the quad-core x7433RE at 1.5 to 3.4 GHz for HMIs, protocol conversion and single-application control. Both share the same memory, I/O, power input and temperature rating, so the choice comes down to how much parallel work the application carries.

Networking is two 2.5GbE ports on Intel I226 and one GbE port on Intel I210, enough for a control network, a camera or device network and an uplink. The six COM ports are two RS-232/422/485 and two RS-232 on DB9, plus two RS-232 on internal headers, and an 8-bit DIO can be selected in BIOS in place of COM4. USB is three USB 3.2 Type-A ports and one USB 3.2 Type-C port at the rear, with a USB 2.0 header inside. An M.2 M-key (2242/2280) takes an NVMe or SATA SSD, an M.2 E-key (2230) takes Wi-Fi, and an M.2 B-key (3042/3052) with SIM takes a cellular module, with one SATA port alongside.

Power is 9 to 36 V DC on a barrel connector or 4-pin header, so the boards run from 12 or 24 V supplies directly. The ASL253 series operates from -40 to 80 °C with 0.2 m/s airflow over the supplied heatsink, carries CE and FCC compliance and a TPM 2.0, and supports Windows 11 IoT Enterprise and Ubuntu 22.04.
