Digital I/O Modules

Digital I/O Modules for Switches, Relays and Counters

Digital I/O modules handle machine control, switch and relay sensing, and counting and timing in industrial automation, transport and defense systems.

The range spans 36 to 96-line GPIO boards with counter/timers, opto-isolated input boards for noisy 24 V environments and Form C relay output boards that switch loads directly, all rated for -40 to +85 °C.

Modules fit PC/104 and Mini PCIe hosts; our guide to the PC/104 bus variants explains which fits which host.

Beyond Digital: Data Acquisition and I/O Modules

What to Specify in a Digital I/O Module

A digital I/O module reads switches and sensors and drives relays, lamps and solenoids from an embedded computer. Isolation and output type matter as much as the number of lines.

Channel Count

From 16 lines up to high-density modules. Count inputs and outputs, then allow spares for later changes.

Optical Isolation

Optoisolated inputs protect the computer from field wiring, ground loops and voltage spikes.

Relay Outputs

Form C relay outputs switch external loads directly, without a separate relay board in the enclosure.

Counters and Timers

Counter and timer channels on selected modules measure frequency, count pulses and generate timed outputs.

PC/104 Stacking

PC/104 and PC/104-Plus modules stack on the CPU board, so I/O is added without cabling to another enclosure.

Temperature Range

Modules are rated from -40 to 85 °C, which suits vehicles, rail equipment and outdoor enclosures.
