The Short Answer
Every device on a CAN bus can send, and messages carry an identifier that sets their priority. If two devices transmit at once, the higher-priority message wins without corrupting the other, which makes CAN reliable for real-time control. Cable length trades off against speed: lower bit rates allow much longer runs.

Why It Matters
The outdoor PC weather station case study uses a fanless PC with COM, CAN and DIO for sensor integration, and our RS-232 vs RS-485 FAQ covers the serial alternatives. See our industrial mini PCs.
