SDI to Optical Fiber Overview
Some SDI links are simply too long for copper: between buildings on a campus, from a stadium camera position to the OB truck, or from a studio to a remote gallery. The SDI to Optical Fiber from Yuan is built for those runs in broadcast, live production and pro AV work. It is the transmitter half of a fiber extender pair that puts a 3G, HD or SD-SDI signal onto single-mode fiber.
The input is one SDI connector supporting 3G-SDI at 1920 x 1080p60/50, HD-SDI at 1080p30/25/24, 1080i60/50 and 720p60/50, and SD-SDI at 480i and 576i. The outputs are one LC connector for single-mode fiber at a 1310 nm wavelength, carrying the input format unchanged, and one SDI loop-through. Up to 16 channels of 24-bit, 48 kHz embedded audio go across the fiber. Yuan rates the link at up to 10 km.
The optical side uses an MSA-compatible SFP port, so modules can be swapped for longer reach or a different connector type, and Yuan describes it as compatible with other SDI-fibre equipment. The SDI to Optical Fiber is plug and play and runs from a 7.5V to 15V DC input. At the far end it pairs with the Optical Fiber to SDI receiver. For shorter copper runs, the SDI Repeater reclocks the signal instead.
In practice the transmitter sits at the source with a local monitor on the loop-through. We supply the SDI to Optical Fiber configured and tested with the sources, displays and fiber it will connect to, normally as a matched pair with its receiver.
