A sealed enclosure with little airflow needs a switch that passes its heat into a flat mounting surface rather than into the air. The EPS-8130-XT is the heat spreader model in the Diamond Systems EPS-8130 series, a PC/104 Ethernet switch designed for industrial, on-vehicle and military use and a direct replacement for the earlier EPS-8100.
It provides eight Gigabit copper ports (10/100/1000 Mbps) with non-blocking wire-speed performance on latching connectors. Switching is managed Layer 2+, with Layer 2 embedded software on a 416 MHz MIPS 24KEc microcontroller that keeps dual application images on board. Management runs through an in-band web interface over any Ethernet port or a command-line interface over RS-232, and the switch works standalone or with a host SBC. It ships loaded with firmware.
Network features include 4K IEEE 802.1Q VLANs with push and pop of up to two tags, 8K MAC addresses, eight priorities and eight CoS queues per port, per-queue and per-port shaping and policing, storm control, IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation, RSTP and MSTP, IEEE 802.1X and jumbo frames at all speeds. The EPS-8130 is the same switch with a low-profile heat sink, and the EPS-24026-104 adds 24 ports and SFP sockets on the same PC/104 size.
The heat spreader is the same size as the PCB and has two mounting hole patterns, for SAE #6-32 and metric M3 fasteners. It supports the full -40 to +85 °C range. Power comes through a built-in wide-range DC/DC supply compatible with common vehicle and industrial sources, with 5.4 W typical at +5 V. The board follows the PC/104 form factor, and the C-EPS8000-KIT cable kit supplies eight Ethernet cables, a power cable and a serial cable.
