Diamond Systems EPS-8130 Managed 8-Port Gigabit PC/104 Ethernet Switches with Heat Sink or Heat Spreader

Small PC/104 systems in vehicles and industrial machines often need just a few switched Gigabit ports, yet the switch still has to fit the stack height, handle vehicle power and run across a wide temperature range. The Diamond Systems EPS-8130 series, also called Epsilon-8130 by Diamond, answers that with an eight-port managed switch on the PC/104 footprint, designed for industrial, on-vehicle and military use.

Both models share the same board. Eight Gigabit copper ports (10/100/1000 Mbps) run at non-blocking wire speed on latching connectors. Layer 2 embedded software runs on a 416 MHz MIPS 24KEc microcontroller, reached through an in-band web interface or a command-line interface over RS-232, and the switch works standalone or with a host SBC. It supports 8K MAC addresses, 4K IEEE 802.1Q VLANs, eight CoS queues per port, storm control, IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation, RSTP and MSTP, IEEE 802.1X and jumbo frames. On-board memory holds dual application images, boot code and MAC addresses, and VeriPHY cable diagnostics help trace wiring faults. The EPS-8130 is a direct replacement for the earlier EPS-8100 and fully backwards compatible in all key respects.

The two models differ in cooling. The EPS-8130 uses a low-profile heat sink that fits within the PC/104 height limit above the PCB and is fixed with two screws. The EPS-8130-XT has a heat spreader the same size as the PCB, with two mounting hole patterns for SAE #6-32 and metric M3 fasteners, for designs that draw heat into the enclosure. Both carry the same ports, software and power supply, so the choice rests only on how the enclosure removes heat.

Power comes through a built-in wide-range DC/DC supply compatible with common vehicle and industrial sources, and the board draws 5.4 W typical at +5 V. Both cooling options support the full -40 to +85 °C range. The board follows the PC/104 form factor and ships with the heat sink fitted. The C-EPS8000-KIT cable kit supplies eight Ethernet cables, a power cable and a serial cable, and the switch ships loaded with firmware. Diamond names industrial, on-vehicle and military uses, and outdoor and vehicle installs, as target applications.
