Small robots and drones often need a managed switch for a dozen or more devices, and may have no use for 10G uplinks. The EPSM-12G2F is Diamond Systems’ 26-port module for that brief: a small Ethernet switch module with the switching core, packet memory and management software on board, so for many designs the carrier only needs magnetics, I/O connectors and an input voltage regulator.
The module provides 24 10/100/1000 copper ports, 12 from the on-board PHY and 12 from a PHY on the carrier, plus two 1G/2.5G SFP ports for fiber or copper transceivers. WebStaX Layer 2+ software is built in and handles 8K MAC addresses, 4K VLANs, 8K IPv4 and IPv6 multicast groups and jumbo frames at all speeds, with 4 MB of packet memory. Management runs through a web GUI, a command-line interface over RS-232 and SNMP v1/v2c/v3.
Network features include RSTP and MSTP, IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation on Layer 2 to Layer 4 information, multicast and broadcast storm control, IEEE 802.1X and 8 priorities with 8 QoS queues per port; our explainer on what a managed switch is covers what these controls add. Two Samtec ERF5 connectors of 120 pins each carry all power and data to the carrier, with the SFP, QSGMII and further copper lanes on the second connector. The EPSM-10GX4 and EPSM-10GX offer 10G SFI uplinks and Layer 3 builds on the same footprint.
The module takes 5 V DC ±5% from the carrier, and Diamond quotes 8.0 W at 24 V DC input with 12 ports active. ActiPHY and PerfectReach reduce power on short cables and shut down idle ports. It operates from -40 to +85 °C with Diamond’s heat sink or heat spreader fitted. Diamond provides a carrier design guide, a development kit with carrier design files, CPLD code for LED logic, a cable kit and free branding of the web interface, plus a custom carrier board service.
