Does Jetson Thor Need a New Carrier Board?

Yes. The NVIDIA Jetson Thor module uses a different connector, higher power (up to 130 W) and new I/O compared with AGX Orin, so it needs a carrier board designed for Thor rather than an Orin board. Moving from AGX Orin to Thor is a platform change, not a drop-in module swap.

01

Why Thor needs its own carrier board

Yes. Jetson Thor is a new module generation built on NVIDIA Blackwell, with a different connector, a higher power envelope (up to 130 W against the 60 W ceiling of AGX Orin) and new I/O. An AGX Orin carrier board will not accept a Thor module, so a Thor deployment needs a carrier board designed for Thor.

The NVIDIA Jetson Thor module comes in two versions, the T5000 and the lower-power T4000, and both use the same Thor carrier interface. A carrier board designed for Thor can therefore usually take either, within the power and cooling it was built for. What it cannot do is accept an Orin module, and an Orin board cannot accept Thor.

02

Why it is not a drop-in

The jump in compute, which NVIDIA puts at around 7.5× AGX Orin, comes with real changes to power delivery, thermal design and high-speed I/O routing. A carrier board has to be engineered for that envelope: the power stage, the cooling interface and the connector all differ. Reusing an Orin board is not an option, and the thermal solution that held a 60 W Orin will not hold a 130 W Thor.

  • //
Connector and pinout. Thor uses a new module connector; Orin carrier boards are not compatible.
  • //
Power and thermal. Up to 130 W needs a redesigned power stage and a more capable cooling solution.
  • //
I/O. New high-speed interfaces, such as 25GbE networking and PCIe Gen5, require a board laid out for Thor, not adapted from Orin.
  • //
Software. Thor runs JetPack 7, so the operating system image and drivers also move to a new release.

FAQ · 01
What is the difference between the Jetson T5000 and T4000?
They are the two NVIDIA Jetson Thor modules. The T5000 is the top variant, with up to 2,070 FP4 TFLOPS, 128 GB and up to 130 W; the T4000 is the lower-power variant, with up to 1,200 FP4 TFLOPS, 64 GB and up to 70 W. Both use the Blackwell GPU.

What a Thor carrier board has to provide

A Thor carrier board does the same job as any Jetson carrier board, but at a higher power and data rate. The main design areas are below.

  • //
Power delivery. A power stage sized for up to 130 W of module load, plus everything on the carrier, from a wide-range DC input in vehicle and robot builds.
  • //
Cooling. A thermal interface and heatsink or cold plate rated for the module’s full power mode, or a deliberate cap on the power mode.
  • //
High-speed networking. QSFP28 or multiple 10GbE and 5GbE ports to use Thor’s 25GbE controllers for cameras, lidar and sensor bridges.
  • //
Cameras and storage. MIPI CSI-2 lanes or GMSL2 deserialisers for cameras, and PCIe Gen5 NVMe for fast recording.
05

Migrating an AGX Orin design

A move from AGX Orin to Thor is best treated as a new hardware revision of the product. Start with the workload: profile the current application on a Thor developer kit to confirm the gain and choose between the T5000 and T4000. Then review the power budget, because the system’s supply, wiring and battery or vehicle input may need to grow. Next comes the carrier board and enclosure, either an off-the-shelf Thor board or a new design that keeps the existing connector layout on the case where possible.

Software runs in parallel: port the application to JetPack 7, rebuild the models and re-validate accuracy and timing. A pilot batch then checks thermal behavior at the top of the temperature range before the rollout.

06

Planning a Thor build

Because Thor is a platform change, the time to plan the carrier board, enclosure and thermal design is at the start. We can scope a Thor system now that the modules are shipping, or design the migration path from an existing AGX Orin system so the move is deliberate rather than forced. Our Jetson thermal design guide covers the cooling side, which is often the hardest part at 130 W.

Our Jetson Thor carrier boards include boards with QSFP28 25GbE, 5GbE, CAN FD and camera expansion, and military-grade boards with quad 10GbE and PCIe Gen5 NVMe. Existing Orin systems stay supported on AGX Orin carrier boards, so there is no need to move before the workload calls for it.

Quick answers on Jetson Thor carrier boards

Jetson Thor and carrier boards: common questions

Can a Jetson Thor module fit an AGX Orin carrier board?

No. Thor uses a different connector, power level and I/O, so it needs a carrier board designed for Thor.

Do the T5000 and T4000 use the same carrier board?

Usually, yes. Both Thor modules share the Thor carrier interface. Check that the board’s power stage and cooling suit the module and power mode you plan to run.

Will my Orin software run on Thor?

Mostly, after a rebuild. Thor uses JetPack 7, so applications move to the new release and models are rebuilt with its TensorRT version. CUDA code usually carries across with little change.

Is there a Jetson Thor developer kit?

Yes. NVIDIA sells the Jetson AGX Thor Developer Kit with a T5000 module on a reference carrier, for development rather than deployment.

Should I move from AGX Orin to Thor?

Only if the workload needs it. Thor suits large models, many high-resolution sensors and generative AI. AGX Orin remains in production and is the lower-power choice for current vision workloads.
