What Is JetPack 6?

JetPack 6 is NVIDIA’s Jetson software release line for the Jetson Orin family. Built on Jetson Linux 36 with Ubuntu 22.04 and Linux kernel 5.15, it introduced an upgradeable compute stack, so CUDA and TensorRT can be updated without reflashing the board support package. It runs from 6.0 to 6.2, and 6.2 added the Super modes.

01

What JetPack 6 is

JetPack 6 is the release line of NVIDIA’s Jetson software development kit built for the Jetson Orin family. Every JetPack 6 release pairs Jetson Linux 36, the board support package with the bootloader, kernel and drivers, with a set of AI and media libraries: CUDA, cuDNN, TensorRT, VPI and the multimedia APIs.

It sits between two other lines. JetPack 5 runs Ubuntu 20.04 and covers both Xavier and Orin modules. JetPack 7 moves to Ubuntu 24.04 and was introduced with Jetson Thor. JetPack 6 is the Ubuntu 22.04 line, and it is the one most Orin products have been developed and validated on.

This page covers what is specific to the 6.x releases. Our guide to the NVIDIA JetPack software stack explains the components that every JetPack version shares.

02

What changed from JetPack 5

NVIDIA described JetPack 6 as its largest Jetson software change. The main differences for anyone moving a product across are these.

  • //
Newer base. Jetson Linux 36 brings Linux kernel 5.15 and an Ubuntu 22.04 root file system, replacing kernel 5.10 and Ubuntu 20.04.
  • //
Upgradeable compute stack. CUDA, cuDNN, TensorRT, VPI and the DLA compiler can be updated without moving to a new Jetson Linux release, so the AI libraries and the board support package no longer have to change together.
  • //
Bring your own kernel. Jetson Linux 36 was reworked so other kernels and Linux distributions can run on Orin. NVIDIA lists partner offerings from Canonical, Red Hat, Wind River and others.
  • //
Real-time option. A prebuilt kernel package with PREEMPT_RT is provided for applications that need tighter timing.
  • //
Orin only. JetPack 6 drops the Xavier modules, which stay on JetPack 5.1.x.

JetPack 6 releases compared

Three main releases make up the line. Point releases after them carry fixes, so always read NVIDIA’s release notes for the exact build before you fix a version.

Release Jetson Linux CUDA TensorRT What it added
JetPack 6.0 36.3 12.2 8.6 First production release of JetPack 6
JetPack 6.1 36.4 12.6 10.3 Newer AI libraries, including cuDNN 9.3 and VPI 3.2
JetPack 6.2 36.4.3 12.6 10.3 Super modes for Jetson Orin Nano and Orin NX production modules

Because of the upgradeable compute stack, NVIDIA documents how to run the newer libraries on an earlier Jetson Linux 36 release. That lets a fielded system pick up a TensorRT update without a full reflash, provided the carrier board vendor supports it. CUDA and TensorRT versions still matter for your models, because an engine built for one TensorRT version has to be rebuilt for another.

FAQ · 01
What does Super mode in JetPack 6.2 do?
It adds higher power modes for Jetson Orin Nano and Orin NX modules, raising GPU and memory clocks for more AI throughput. It needs a carrier and cooling that can handle the extra power.

Upgrading to JetPack 6

Moving from JetPack 5 to JetPack 6 is a reflash, not a package update. NVIDIA does not support an apt upgrade across the two lines, because the kernel, bootloader and root file system all change. The usual routes are NVIDIA SDK Manager or the flashing tools in Jetson Linux, and for fleets NVIDIA provides an over-the-air update tool for Orin devices coming from JetPack 5.

On a production carrier, the carrier vendor’s board support package has to support Jetson Linux 36 first. The kernel, device tree and drivers for that carrier are part of Linux for Tegra, so a JetPack 6 image from NVIDIA alone may not bring up every camera or serial port. Containers need the same care: an image built on a Jetson Linux 35 base will not run correctly on a JetPack 6 system.

Orin Nano developer kits shipped from the factory with firmware for JetPack 5, so they need a firmware update before booting a JetPack 6 SD card image.

FAQ · 02
How do you check which JetPack a Jetson is running?
Read /etc/nv_tegra_release, which shows the Jetson Linux release, or run apt show nvidia-jetpack. The community jtop tool also shows JetPack and library versions on one screen.

Software built on JetPack 6

Much of the Jetson software that sits above JetPack is released against a particular JetPack line, so the JetPack version decides which framework releases you can use.

  • //
ROS 2. Ubuntu 22.04 is the base for ROS 2 Humble, so JetPack 6 is a natural fit for robots built on Humble. NVIDIA’s Isaac ROS 3.x packages target JetPack 6.
  • //
DeepStream. The DeepStream 7.x video analytics releases are built for JetPack 6, with each release tied to a specific 6.x version.
  • //
Containers. NVIDIA publishes Jetson base images on NGC for Jetson Linux 36, from a minimal base to images with the full JetPack libraries. The image tag has to match the Jetson Linux release on the device.
  • //
Jetson Platform Services. JetPack 6 introduced a set of prebuilt, API-driven services, such as video storage and AI perception, for building camera and analytics applications.
06

JetPack 6 or JetPack 7?

JetPack 7 runs Jetson Linux 38 on Ubuntu 24.04. It launched for Jetson Thor, and later 7.x releases extend support to Orin modules. For a new Orin design that choice is worth making early, because it fixes the Ubuntu release and library versions you validate against. Check NVIDIA’s Jetson software roadmap for how long each line will receive security updates, and record the exact JetPack and carrier support package versions in your build documentation.

For an Orin product already validated on JetPack 6, staying on the 6.x line is often the lower-risk path until the carrier vendor and your application are ready to move. Our Jetson Orin systems and rugged Jetson computers list the module in each system, which tells you which JetPack lines it can run.

Quick answers on JetPack 6

JetPack 6: common questions

Does JetPack 6 support Jetson Xavier?

No. Xavier NX and AGX Xavier stay on JetPack 5.1.x. JetPack 6 supports the Jetson Orin family only.

Does JetPack 6 run on the original Jetson Nano?

No. The original Jetson Nano ends at JetPack 4.6. JetPack 6 needs an Orin module, such as the Jetson Orin Nano.

Which Ubuntu version does JetPack 6 use?

Ubuntu 22.04. Every JetPack 6 release uses an Ubuntu 22.04 root file system with Linux kernel 5.15.

Which CUDA version comes with JetPack 6?

CUDA 12.2 or 12.6. JetPack 6.0 ships CUDA 12.2. JetPack 6.1 and 6.2 ship CUDA 12.6.

Can I upgrade JetPack 5 to JetPack 6 with apt?

No. A JetPack 5 to 6 move needs a reflash or NVIDIA’s over-the-air tool. Within the 6.x line, package updates usually work.
