What Makes a Touch Screen Vandal-Proof?

A vandal-proof touch screen combines toughened glass, a touch technology that works through that glass, and a sealed, rigid housing. Its resistance to impact is measured with an IK rating: IK07 withstands a 2 joule impact, and IK10 withstands 20 joules. Stainless steel or aluminum enclosures and hidden fixings finish the job.

The Short Answer

Projected capacitive touch senses through glass, so the glass can be thick and toughened without stopping the screen working. Resistive screens have a soft top film that can be cut or scratched more easily. In heavy industry, the same protection guards against accidental knocks from tools and equipment as much as deliberate damage.
