What Is an M12 L-Coded Connector?

An M12 L-coded connector is an M12 power coding for DC supplies, rated up to 16 A at 63 V, defined in IEC 61076-2-111. It is used mainly to distribute 24 V power to PROFINET devices and field modules, replacing larger 7/8 inch power connectors, with 4 or 5 contacts.

The Short Answer

L coding lets M12 carry real power. Where an A-coded connector suits a sensor supply, an L-coded connector feeds whole I/O modules and devices, and its distinct key stops it being mistaken for a signal or Ethernet connection.

L Coding and the Other Power Codings

L and T coding cover DC power; S and K coding cover AC. The M12 power codings FAQ compares all four. Our guide to M12 connectors compares every coding, and the M12 coding FAQ explains how coding works.
