The Short Answer
SWaP-C is shorthand for the four limits that decide whether equipment fits a platform: how much space it takes, how much it weighs, how much power it draws and what it costs. Engineers often drop the C and talk about SWaP when cost is handled separately.
-
//
Size Volume in the payload bay, rack or cabin, including room for cables and cooling.
-
//
Weight On a drone, every gram of payload trades directly against flight time and range.
-
//
Power The draw from the platform supply, and the heat that has to be removed without fans.
-
//
Cost Unit and lifecycle cost, including integration, qualification and spares.
Why It Matters
For edge AI, SWaP-C is why compact system-on-module platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson suit drones and vehicles: a single sealed computer replaces a rack of hardware. Our guide to choosing a Jetson companion computer for drones works through the trade-off, and the MILBOX-ORNX shows a low-SWaP design for smaller airframes.
