Diamond Systems SABRECOM Intel Core i7-7660U IP67 Military Rugged Computers with MIL-STD I/O

Vehicle electronics usually fail at the weak points first: a connector that works loose under vibration, a seam that lets water in, or a power input that cannot cope with vehicle electrical transients. Diamond Systems designed the SABRECOM range of military rugged computers around those weak points. The SABRECOM series places an Intel Core i7-7660U processor inside a body milled from a single block of aluminum, with gaskets on every mating surface and connector screw for IP67 protection, and brings every signal out on MIL-DTL-38999 style circular connectors.

Compute comes from Diamond’s Venus 3.5 inch SBC, a 7th Gen Kaby Lake Core i7-7660U with 4 GB of DDR4 soldered to the board and a rugged 16 GB RSODIMM, giving 20 GB in total. The processor is conduction cooled straight into the heat sink lid, so the system runs across the full -40 to +75 °C range of the board without a fan. Storage starts at 256 GB of TLC flash and can be increased to 1 TB with SATA DOM and mSATA modules, each screwed down against shock. Expansion uses the PCI/104-Express socket and two Mini PCIe sockets on Venus, so serial, CAN or analog I/O modules can be added inside the enclosure.

The two SABRECOM models share the same hardware and differ by operating system. The SABRECOM-VNS-001 ships with Windows 10 64-bit and Diamond’s Power Loss Protection feature, which lets Windows survive repeated instant removal of power without a normal shutdown. The SABRECOM-VNS-002 ships with 64-bit Linux for teams that build their application on an open software stack.

Power comes from Diamond’s JMM-7500 supply, an isolated 80 W design with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704 and MIL-STD-1275 compliance and a 9-36 V DC input. Diamond has tested and qualified SABRECOM systems to MIL-STD-202G shock and vibration levels. Typical SABRECOM installations include tactical ground vehicles, test equipment and mobile command systems, where a compact sealed military rugged computer has to keep running through heat, cold, spray and constant vibration. Because the memory is either soldered or held in a rugged RSODIMM and both storage modules are screwed down, nothing inside relies on friction to stay seated under constant vibration.
