MezIO-C180-50 Overview
Serial is still how a lot of plant equipment talks. Weighing scales, barcode readers, older PLCs and test instruments often offer nothing but an RS-232 port, while drives, meters and newer sensors tend to sit on an RS-485 bus. The MezIO-C180-50 is part of the Neousys MezIO-C180/C181 series of eight-port serial MezIO modules, and it is the version weighted towards RS-232.
It gives the host computer four RS-232/422/485 multi-mode ports and four RS-232 ports, each running from 50 bps to 921.6 Kbps with 256-byte TX and RX FIFOs and ESD protection. Mode and termination on the multi-mode ports are set in the BIOS, so one MezIO-C180-50 can serve an RS-485 drive chain and several RS-232 instruments at the same time. Windows 10 and Linux are supported. Where RS-422/485 matters more than extra RS-232, the MezIO-C181-50 swaps the four RS-232 ports for four RS-422/485 ports.
We fit the MezIO-C180-50 inside the Neousys system on its high-speed board-to-board connector with three-point mezzanine mounting, then set the port modes and test the build before it ships. Each system has one MezIO interface, so the serial module takes that position. It fits the Nuvo-9000, Nuvo-11000, Nuvo-11160GC, Nuvo-9160GC and Nuvo-9166GC series, and the compact POC-900, POC-700, POC-700-FT and POC-600 computers.
All eight ports leave the system on one 68-pin SCSI-II female connector. One connector for all eight ports keeps the serial cabling at the computer to a single run, which makes each device easier to trace in a cabinet. RS-422 ports use TxD+, TxD-, RxD+ and RxD-, and RS-485 ports use Data+ and Data-.
